Its not cheap by Viet Nam standards ($262 for
two) but in fact the whole experience is worth it. The boat is well
appointed and the itinerary packed for the 2 day / 1 night we spent on
board.
Only downside - the number of junks who ply the same
route - if you are looking for isolation this is not for you and the 4
hour ride to the junk from Ha Noi can seem tedious. Crew do their best
and the scenery is magnificent. Everyone also said it was the best
night's sleep they'd had while in Viet Nam. Found other passengers to
be discerning whch meant very enjoyable dinner conversations.
Encourage the staff to do a Spring Roll cooking class - it is really worth attending

I paid full price for a
Deluxe room with a single supplement of $221 US. I did look in the
Superior room and I noticed no difference. I see no benefits in getting
the Deluxe over the Superior.
The mini bus ride was a 16 seater,
but they didn't put more than 5 passengers in each, unlike some of the
others I saw on the road. The boat is fantastic, and the crew keep it
in immaculate condition. All meals were fantastic and there was more
than enough. The rooms are great and well kept.
Guests on my
trip ranged from about 30 to 60, and there were no loud boozers on
board, everyone went to bed fairly early. My cruise was not fully
booked, there were about 25 guests on board.
The weather was
misty and drizzling and so we did not do some of the activities, but
there were no complaints about this. The tour guides are great, however
they are casual employees and are not permanent employees of the boat.
Our guide advised he has worked on nearly every boat in Halong Bay at
some time or another.
I would highly recommend lashing out on a boat like this to see this major highlight of Vietnam.
I booked this trip after a cheaper (Phoenix)
cruise I had in mind was fully booked. I usually get bored quickly and
decided to only book the one night cruise. I was completely wrong here
and I should have done the two day.

The Paloma was recommended by the redoubtable Mrs Hue at Golden Sun 4 in Hanoi and boy was she on the button!
Although
not one of the bigger cruise boats in Halong, the Paloma is undoubtably
one of the best. New, well-equipped and extremely comfortable the
Paloma crew were first class and did all they could to give us a
memorable experience.
We took the two-night cruise and totally
lucked-in because we had the smaller, second-day boat to ourselves
along with four crew and our beach-barbecue was a romantic occasion
because we didn't have to share it!
Quantity of food at lunch
and dinner was perhaps overwhelming but despite what some people have
said on trip Advisor we thought the quality was excellent - especially
when you think it is being prepared in a galley on a relatively small
boat - not some super-liner cruising the tourist hot-spots.
It was a great way to relax with stunning scenery, a slow pace and attentive staff.
the
rooms are obviously a little on the small size but extremely
well-equipped with the best showers we had anywhere in Vietnam. But
beware when you look at the web-site because it can appear that the
Deluxe rooms have balconies - they do not, only the suites have
balconies. Nonetheless we couldn't have wished for a better cruise boat
and better staff.

We chose Paloma for it's 3day, 2nt itinerary,
including BBQ on a private beach, it's price for a large cabin with
private sun deck (not the cheapest, but definitely not the most
expensive)and the great reviews, especially for the food....and our
expectations were exceeded time and time again. The Paloma was perfect
for us in every way and if you do your research you will also choose
the perfect cruise for you, it might be the Paloma or it might not.
First
of all we had to pay a deposit by PayPal, and had no problems. This
seems to be a reliable and honest business, you can book with
confidence that they will do the best they can to make sure you are
happy.
Our cruise started off with weather so bad that the port
was closed and the junk could not come to meet us...or move at all. We
had to go off in a small boat to find the Paloma in the murky fog,
uncertain whether we would ever move. But the Paloma staff looked after
us beautifully. Our first day itinerary was changed because of this,
but we have no complaints and it made us all the more happy that we had
booked the extra night.
The second day we woke to a sunny day
and our beautiful private BBQ on the beach went ahead. We had 4 great
staff and crew looking after the 2 of us. We have the most wonderful
memories of a very special day.
THE FOOD: We loved the food.
The meals are served to your private table and you only have to share
with your private group. If there are more of you, they put more on
each plate. There is a lot of seafood and we were warned on the bus
ride that if we wanted something special just to let our guide (Vinh)
know and he would arrange alternatives. We had prawns, clams, pippis,
squid, fish, scallops, chicken, pork, beef, salad, rice and fruit. The
first day lunch was 9 courses of tasty wonderful treats. Dinner was
just as large and just as tasty. Breakfast was more western style with
coffee and juice.
EXTRAS: 2 bottles of water/day, fruit basket,
greeted with hot or cold towels after each outing, spring roll cooking
class, night squid fishing, white towels placed in the kayaks to keep
us clean and dry, safety vests fitted for kayaking, fantastic birthday
cake and flowers for my partner's 50th birthday (just let them know of
your occasion) chatting with very friendly and funny staff (Kim, Twan
and Vinh), photos taken of us by staff without asking.....and more.
THE
ROOM: The room was immaculate, the bed was comfortable and quiet. We
slept so well. Our cabin had large sliding doors and three other
windows, mini bar, safety box and life jackets. The shower had plenty
of hot water and good water pressure. We looked at the other rooms and
they were just as lovely, but a bit smaller.
2ND DAY: Wow! and
Wow! We had the best time. We were lucky enough to have the day to
ourselves, while everyone headed back to port we went out in a cute day
boat fully equipped with bar, dining room, sun deck and toilet. We had
lunch cooked for us on our private beach then we explored and sunbathed
(I had a quick dip). Then we went kayaking into a quiet lagoon and saw
monkeys and later visitied a fishing village and interesting museum.
Then we cruised back to the Paloma and saw a glorious sun set. When we
joined the new people on the junk, we were served a different meal,
because they were having the first night meal. That day we felt like
millionaires, we will never forget it.
There is so much more to
tell, but I will finish by saying that the staff had to deal with
difficult (sometimes rude)people and did it so professionally. I have
so much praise for them.
We changed our flights to fit in the
2nt cruise and we couldn't be happier, it was so worth it. If you are
deciding between the suite or the 2nt option....definitiely go for the
2nts, it is very special.

We just got back from our trip which was on Feb
2-3, 2010. We read the few reviews on Tripadvisor before booking this
cruise. They just launched this luxury boat in Dec. Words alone can
hardly do this cruise justice.
Nutshell: Worth every penny for their cleanliness, customer service, food, and beautiful decor.
More details: 1)
CUSTOMER SERIVCE: Never in my life have I ever seen such great service!
Better than a Ritz-Carlton!!! First of all, our flight was delayed so
my friends (another couple we were meeting up w/) called Michael Nguyen
to tell him that we might be coming in at 8am on Feb. 2 which is the
day that we were supposed to leave! So, he arranged for a private car
pick up at the airport for us that would also pick up our 2 friends in
Hanoi, and then drop us off at the boat (4hrs away). Luckily, we got in
town the night before. Pick up was timely (8:15am, just as stated). The
van ride was comfortable with Yang (our tour guide) pointing things out
to us. Yang was perfectly fluent in English which was nice. On board
the ship, we got cool hand towels from staff and a red carpet reception
(literally). Mr. Kim, the dir of cust service was a real treat! He was
so sweet and always smiling! The entire staff on board was sooooo
accommodating! I couldn't believe it! They would bend over backwards! 2)
CLEANLINESS & ROOMS: They had their first cruise in Dec 2009 so
this boat is spotless! Everything is clean and beautiful! Not to
mention that the decor was very tasteless done. I was surprised at how
spacious the rooms were AND how nice the bathrooms were! Incredible!!!!
They did a superb job when they built this junk! 3) PRICE: Ya can't
beat the price! It was $140/pp for a 2 day/1 night cruise that included
all meals (no drinks though so bring your own bottles of wine - they
will start charging corkage though) and pick-up/drop-off at hotel in
Hanoi. 4) ACTIVITIES: We got to kayak through the floating village
and we were the ONLY cruise junk around! Talk about feeling like you
are thoroughly immersed in the Bay! It was soooo peaceful!!! It's nice
not being on the same schedule as all the other junk tours! They also
offered squid fishing at night, and karaoke! We just sat around and
talked w/ Yang the whole evening! 5) FOOD: 9-course lunch and
dinner! WOW!!!! Soooo delicious! Some things were definitely funky, but
we went w/ it b/c we're in Vietnam and it was fun to try dishes we
normally wouldn't try like giant sea clams. All the prawns, beef,
chicken, pork, and fish dishes were great!
Sorry to be so long-winded, but it really was terrific!!!!
***Thank you Paloma for a terrific experience!!!!!!***

Food, activities
We
had a great time on the paloma. We stayed for 2 days, 1 night and went
kayaking, squid fishing, ate way too much and would highly recommend.
Service from the staff was amazing with fresh cool towels avilable
everytime we got on the ship and beautiful and plentiful food.
Nightlife Tip :
Take part in every activity! “Paloma Cruise Ha Long Bay - Simply The Best”

2 couples from Australia. Retirees but VERy fit and active. Where do we
start? The expectations we had were far and away exceeded bu wonderful
staff and fantastic food. yes there were minor hiccups but that is all
part of the journey.
We were collected in an airconditioned
'super mini bus' from our hotel in Hanoi absolutely on time.Travelled
the 4 hours to Ha Long Bay with a stop at the most wonderful and I mean
wonderful community centre for disadvantaged people where they work and
create the most amazing marble sculptures, silk artwork of world
standard, clothing and laquor work second to none - this is not a junk
shop. It has very clean toilet facilities and after you have spent 1/2
and hour here you are ready for the onward trip to Ha Long Bay.
All
the while you have an English speaking tour host who makes sure that
you have everything you need. Arriving at the boat dock, you are taken
out to the 'mother ship' where you are welcomed with a full briefing and
drinks/food.
We had the thee day/two night cruise and you
definitely need this to enjoy what the area has to offer. The rooms have
superb amenities.
At this stage I have to say there was one
AWEFUL woman and her family from Adelaide in South Australia who was an
embarrassment to our country. She was a buffoon and extrememly ILL
MANNERED and did nothing but complain - we think she was just a
miserable fat toad who would complain about anything. She went on and on
and on and in the end we told her to just shut up and stop annoying
everyone.
So, back to the trip. FANTASTIC staff, food and
activities capped of with a 'formal' BBQ on a deserted private beach -
fully catered with wine (all drinks are extra's but at very reasonable
prices)
Kayaking, walking, swimming - all available and of course a great limestone cave walk.
All in all 110% - we will be back.
And lastly special thanks to the team: Star, Loan (Kate), and the GM Mr Thuc
